The BioIndustry Association announces 2021 charity partnership with Ovarian Cancer Action

The BioIndustry Association (BIA) is proud to be working with Ovarian Cancer Action as its charity partner for 2021. One woman dies in the UK from ovarian cancer every two hours and although five-year survival rates for ovarian cancer are improving, other cancers, such as breast cancer, had better survival rates two generations ago than ovarian cancer does today.

Since 2006, Ovarian Cancer Action has funded £12.3 million of scientific research projects to accelerate progress in three main areas: preventing the disease, diagnosing it early, and developing effective, personalised treatments. They have opened the Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre (OCARC), Europe’s first ever centre dedicated to ovarian cancer research and they continue to run HHMT International Forum on Ovarian Cancer, which has been bringing together the world’s leading scientists to determine research priorities around the globe since 1987.

The charity also campaigns to increase awareness of ovarian cancer and improve understanding of symptoms among the public and GP.

Steve Bates OBE, Chief Executive of the BIA said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Ovarian Cancer Action for our 2021 Charity partnership. The charity does vital work to raise awareness and find treatments for ovarian cancer, and we will look to build understanding of their work in the UK life sciences sector, particularly through our 2021 Women in Biotech events and our virtual Gala Celebration in January.”
Cary Wakefield, CEO of Ovarian Cancer Action said: “Ovarian cancer is an incredibly complex disease with shockingly low survival rates. We are committed to changing this for women affected, now and in the future, and the partnership with BIA will play a significant role in achieving our ambitions. We are extremely grateful for this opportunity and look forward to connecting with BIA's members and research networks to open up new collaborations and accelerate progress in research. Together, we can work towards a future where every woman survives ovarian cancer.”
